My First Newsletter And Microrpg

I’ve made a newsletter. You’ve probably seen the subcribe button I plastered on the top of this website.

These are my goals for the newsletter:

  • Share exciting new Solo and Duet RPGS that I find, as well as the Actual Plays I write for them.
  • Discuss my process for playing and designing Solo and Duet RPGs
  • Share any new games that I make

Posts from the newsletter will also arrive on this blog.

The 58mm RPG Jam

I wrote my first micro-RPG for the 58mm RPG jam. The jam’s main criteria is that your game must fit in a circle of diameter 58mm — the size of a badge.

I used the physical badge as the source of my inspiration. It immediately brought to my mind two things: a police badge or the Scarlet Letter.

Initially, I tried to work on a micro-rpg on badges of “shame” and “sin”. However, I quickly ran into a wall because I was not skilled enough to write on such a heavy topic in so little space. Perhaps I will come back to this idea another day.

Therefore, I pivoted to working on the police angle. The first trope I thought of was “Turn In Your Badge” (TV tropes link). I especially liked the idea of being able to physically interact with the badge that the game would be printed on, so I ran with it.

With such a small design space, I could only comfortably fit about 5 sentences of text. To save space, I decided to jettison written game mechanics and focus on setting the . This resulted in a game that is more of a one-scene LARP.

Peace, Mr Zech.
